Current Volunteer Needs

For more information on any of the opportunities listed below, please contact Matt Wysocki at mwysocki@ChamberBloomington.org.

Early College Mentors: Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors for the Bloomington High School North Early College program.  The Early College Mentoring program is for first-generation, low-income, or minority ninth graders who have a desire to go to college.  Students will meet with their adult mentors at school over lunch on one Friday per month throughout the school year to discuss career and college plans.   A required mentor orientation session will be held on Monday, September 13th at 6:00 pm at North High School.  Free lunch will be provided at all meetings.  CLICK HERE for more details, including exact dates and times.

Please consider volunteering to be a mentor!  This is a rewarding opportunity to make a positive impact on teens by sharing your unique educational and professional  experiences.

New Tech Needs Paper: Do you have old letterhead or recyclable paper?  New Tech High School needs your old letterhead for projects and homework.  Please contact Principal Alvin Veach at aveach@mccsc.edu.  New Tech will arrange to collect it!

Reality Store: The Franklin Initiative needs volunteers for the Reality Store program.  The Reality Store is a fun simulation that helps 7th and 8th graders connect academic achievement with the kind of lifestyle they envision for themselves after graduation.  Students are assigned salaries based on their actual GPA.  Then, they proceed from table to table (staffed by our volunteers) to buy housing, transportation, groceries, insurance, furniture, clothing, electronics, vacations, utilizes, child care, pets, electronics, and other real life elements.  2010-2011 Reality Store dates are:

  • Edgewood: Friday, November 5
  • Tri-North: Thursday, December 2
  • Jackson Creek: Wednesday, March 30
  • Batchelor: Thursday, May 12

Internship Placements: The Franklin Initiative needs placements for local high schoolers in connection with a new, highly structured internship program at Broadview Learning Center.

Speakers Bureau: Speakers are needed to speak to junior high and high school students during career days in the local schools.  By doing so, they give students a glimpse of what it's like to be a working adult and help students connect their education to possible future careers.  A brief orientation for new speakers is required.
